Water Cooling
Environmentally friendly water cooling for ULT freezers
Water cooling technology offers an innovative solution for optimizing freezers by switching from traditional air cooling to water cooling.
This method is not only cost-effective but also environmentally friendly, as it minimizes the need for air conditioning to handle the heat output from freezers. Improvements include a reduction in operating costs, extension of freezer lifespan by avoiding filter clogging and overheating, and the opportunity to reuse the heated water for heating facilities such as laboratories and offices.
As part of a large Biobank project at SSI, advanced water-cooled freezers with a capacity of 949 liters have been delivered and installed. These freezers are designed to support storage at extremely low temperatures up to -86°C, which is essential for biobanks.
Biobanks play a critical role in the research infrastructure by facilitating the storage of biological material, which supports health research and international research collaborations.
This technology demonstrates a shift towards more sustainable and efficient methods in the research and health sectors.
The condenser is equipped with a heat exchanger. A constant flow of cool water at this heat exchanger takes the heat away. In contrast to air cooling, the water- cooled freezer has a lower heat output towards the lab environment.
