aintenance of Your ULT Freezers and Why It's Important

Do you have a maintenance plan for your freezers?

To save on energy consumption in your ULT freezer and ensure safe operation, it is important to perform maintenance regularly. How often this should be done depends on a variety of factors that differ from each laboratory. However, a good rule of thumb is to follow the guidelines below:

  1. Quarterly: Defrost door seals and check the seals for punctures, breaks, or leaks. Broken door seals allow cold air (and energy) to escape the freezer and warm air to enter
  2. Biannually: If your freezer has a filter, it should be removed and cleaned
  3. Annually: Perform a complete defrosting of your freezer.Remove your samples from the freezer and place them in another freezer.
Turn off the freezer that needs to be defrosted and leave the doors open for 48 hours (a tip is to place cloths down to absorb the water)
  4. Wipe the freezer down for excess water and clean inside with a cleaning agent recommended by the manufacturer if there is any odor in the freezer
  5. Close the door and restart the freezer. Once the freezer reaches the desired temperature, you can refill it with samples

Having a maintenance plan for your freezers protects your valuable samples, extends the lifespan of your freezers, and further reduces energy costs.
